Context
Big Boss, formerly known as Naked Snake, was on a rescue mission to save some
revolutionaries that supported his ideas. At the same time, Huey is trying to
cover Big Boss’ trail by hiding their nuclear bomb from a military inspection team.
The inspection turns out to be an attack. One of the revolutionaries of note that
Big Boss was saving was beaten within an inch of her life. After saving her, one
of the other revolutionaries tells Big Boss that there is a bomb inside of her.
They take the bomb out inside of the helicopter, and she wakes up, claims that
there is another bomb in her, and jumps out the window. She does this a few
seconds too late, and the helicopter they were in takes a large hit.
Recuperating
Big Boss wakes up in a hospital, horribly injured. The hospital is then under
attack by a group called Cipher, people who want to control the world using the
newest set of technologies, with their goal to be killing Big Boss. Big Boss is
assisted by one of his soldiers in escaping the hospital as it is attacked by The
Man on Fire and The Floating Boy. Ocelot helps Big Boss escape the area afterwards.
He does this out of respect and a view of apprenticeship toward Big Boss. They make
it back, and Ocelot gives a run down on Cipher, Skull Face, and the missions ahead.
They save Miller, and start another military organization called Diamond Dogs.
Sahelanthropus
Huey is found later and claims that Skull Face forced him to build Sahelanthropus,
a weapon to surpass metal gear. Huey also claims that it is not functional yet, as
there is no way there could be enough power to keep Sahelanthropus stable. Sahelanthropus,
however, is fully functional, and a thorn in Big Boss’ side. While trying to stop
Sahelanthropus, Big Boss finds a boy named Eli, who they believe is his son. The results
come back negative, despite the similarity. Big Boss stops Sahelanthropus, which turns
out was being powered by The Floating Boy’s psychic abilities. The Floating Boy takes
a liking to Eli, in which the two steal Sahelanthropus and escape Big Boss.
The Reveal
A tape recording reveals to the player that the Big Boss that you play as is not
actually the Big Boss from Snake Eater. The infiltration of the hospital gives Big Boss,
who covers as one of Big Boss’ soldiers, time to escape on his own, and Ocelot the ability
to explain what is going to happen. They force the player to be Big Boss through psychotherapy,
making the player character believe that they have been Big Boss the whole time, giving the
character Big Boss’ memories. The player character remains Big Boss, giving the soldiers of
Diamond Dogs something to fight for, and giving the actual Big Boss time to work on his own plans.
